Q: Can I transfer my files by FTP?

Q: How can I tell which upload/adding method I have installed? What is the Picture Upload Assistant and what is the Shutterfly Express software?
A: The Picture Upload Assistant works with your browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape. There will be an area that says drag and drop your pictures into this area with Shutterfly circles on it. The Shutterfly Express software can be used off line and allows you to crop, rotate, and add backprinting before adding your images to your online account.

Q: Can I install and use both the Picture Upload Assistant and Shutterfly Express software?
A: Yes, if you are using the plug-in, you can download and install the Shutterfly Express software. The software is complementary to the Picture Upload Assistant and can be used to view and prepare your pictures before you connect to the internet. You can, at any time, switch back and forth between using the Picture Upload Assistant and the Shutterfly Express software.

Q: Can I add pictures without using the Shutterfly Picture Upload Assistant or the Shutterfly Express software?
A: You certainly can! Although the plug-in and the Shutterfly Express software help with large batches of pictures, they are not necessary. To use the regular add method:
First, click 'Add pictures' on the green menu bar.
On the Add pictures page, choose whether you want to create a new album or add to an existing album. Then click the 'Next' button.
Select your pictures from your hard drive using the Browse buttons.
Click on 'Add now' button. Your pictures will begin transferring. A pop-up window informs you of the progress of the transfer. When pictures are fully transferred, a confirmation message appears.

Q: How long does it take to transfer pictures from my computer to Shutterfly?
A: Upload time is dependent on the speed of your Internet connection, but a good rule of thumb for a 56k modem connection is 4 to 6 minutes for a typical 400k image file. Remember that such transfers are asymmetrical - meaning that you can download from the internet faster than you can upload to it, so please be patient. Here are some estimated upload times for other connection speeds:
56k: 4-6 minutes
ISDN/DSL/Cable: about one minute
T1: 20 seconds

Q: How do I know if my pictures were successfully added to my Shutterfly account?
A: At the end of each add session, a pop-up window will appear that will confirm that all the pictures were added successfully to Shutterfly. If your upload session was interrupted you can see what images transfer by clicking on view and looking for the album you created. Then open that album to review the images to want what you originally requested to upload.

Q: While pictures are transferring from my computer to Shutterfly, can I continue to use my browser?
A: You can continue to use your browser while adding pictures, but for the fastest and smoothest tranfers, we recommend that you do not. (Also, if you do decide to use your browser while adding pictures, be sure you do not sign out of your account or close the browser window that you are using for adding pictures to your Shutterfly account. Open a new browser window.)
