Shutterfly Director of Operations Finance

One of Shutterfly’s key differentiators is our ownership and control of our manufacturing operations for our photo books, photos, cards, calendars and other photo-based merchandise. The Director of Operations Finance will play a key financial leadership role for these manufacturing operations. Reporting to the VP Finance, this role will partner closely with the Company’s senior Operations management team to develop product level cost forecasts for materials, labor, shipping and overhead costs, and the related capital expenditures, as well as surfacing insights and observations into the operations. Shutterfly has recently kicked off a new ERP systems initiative and the Director of Operations will have a significant leadership role in developing metrics and reporting for the manufacturing operations via the new systems. The Director of Operations Finance will also work closely with the Customer Service team to capture and report on the related metrics.

The Director of Operations Finance position requires strong analytics, good communication skills, an intellectual curiosity and the ability to work in a faced-paced, “data hungry” environment. The position will initially have two direct reports and will require some travel to Shutterfly’s second production facility located in Charlotte North Carolina. The Company’s cost accounting function will also have a dotted line reporting relationship into the Director of Operations Finance.

Responsibilities include:

  • Partner with SFLY Operations senior management to provide operational analysis and reporting
  • Oversee the continued fine-tuning of the Company’s 12-month rolling cost of goods forecast
  • Develop, monitor and report on operational metrics and drive process to improve consistent productivity and efficiency improvement
  • Leading the analysis of manufacturing costs and preparation of periodic reports comparing standard costs to actual production costs, including comparison’s of production costs by production facility
  • Develop the weekly reporting on operating results to the Operations and Finance management teams and help propose necessary actions to correct course if not meeting goals
  • Work with Operations team on 2008 project to implement new ERP, MRP and BI systems to capture and report on manufacturing data
  • Develop, maintain and educate the company leadership on individual product margins
  • Oversee preparation and review of monthly Operations and production facilities’ budget vs. actual variance analyses
  • Oversee collection and analysis of business activity costs, such as raw material purchases, inventory, labor and shipping
  • Work with customer service team to capture, analyze and report on CS metrics and trends
  • Performing ad hoc financial analysis to support business decision-making
  • Partner with Operations team on outsource relationships to drive best pricing and reporting
  • Oversee finance functions at each manufacturing facility
  • Develop and mentor direct reports

Experience & Requirements:

  • B.S. degree in finance or accounting; MBA preferred
  • 10-12 years of cost accounting or operations finance experience in a high volume manufacturing company
  • Experience should include cost accounting, reporting responsibilities and analytical projects
  • Systems savvy, having experience with budgeting and business analytical packages is a plus
  • Excellent excel skills are assumed
  • Experience with Oracle a plus
  • Must have strong communication and relationship building skills, with the ability to interpret and summarize data to aid management in achieving strategic and operational goals
  • Ability to work in fast pace and high-growth environment
